Peanuts are botanically legumes rather than true nuts, growing underground where they absorb earth's heavy, dense qualities. They possess predominantly sweet taste with secondary astringency, making them initially satisfying but ultimately cloying. Their high oil content—nearly 50% by weight—gives them snigdha (unctuous) and guru (heavy) qualities that resist digestion. The heating potency comes from this concentrated oil and protein density, which requires significant digestive fire to break down.
Vata increases despite the oily nature because peanuts are simultaneously drying in their astringent component and difficult to digest, creating āma (undigested residue) that obstructs vāta's pathways. The heavy, sticky quality can actually worsen vāta disorders by clogging subtle channels rather than providing the flowing oleation that vāta truly needs. Roasting intensifies the heating and drying qualities, making roasted peanuts more vāta-aggravating than raw or boiled ones. Boiled fresh peanuts, still soft and moist, are the least problematic preparation for vāta.
Pitta responds poorly to peanuts' heating nature, especially when roasted or salted. The combination of oil, heat, and concentrated protein increases rakta (blood tissue) heat and can trigger inflammatory skin conditions, acid reflux, and irritability. The astringent quality provides some minor cooling effect, but it cannot overcome the fundamental heating tendency. Fresh peanuts are less heating than aged ones, as oxidation of their oils over time increases the inflammatory potential.
Kapha accumulates readily from peanuts' heavy, oily, sweet qualities. The dense protein and fat content directly builds kapha tissue, while the difficulty of digestion creates the thick, sticky āma that is kapha's hallmark. Even small quantities can increase mucus production, congestion, and sluggishness in kapha individuals. The astringency offers no significant benefit here, as it's overwhelmed by the food's other properties.
Preparation matters significantly. Dry roasting without oil is less kapha-aggravating than oil roasting or frying. Soaking raw peanuts overnight and then cooking them reduces some heaviness. Combining peanuts with warming spices like ginger, black pepper, or cumin can kindle digestive fire enough to manage small quantities, though this doesn't change the fundamental nature of the food.

Through the year
Winter is the only season when peanuts suit most constitutions, and even then only for those with robust digestion. The cold, dry qualities of winter weather can balance some of peanuts' heating, heavy nature, and physical activity in cold weather helps metabolize the density. Vāta types should still limit quantity and prefer boiled preparations.
Spring's kapha-dominant nature makes peanuts especially unsuitable, as they directly add to seasonal mucus and heaviness. Summer heat combined with peanuts' heating virya creates excess pitta readily. Autumn's dry, mobile qualities seem like they might suit peanuts' oils, but the difficulty of digestion outweighs any theoretical benefit.
Those with strong, consistent digestive fire and physically demanding work in cold climates can incorporate moderate amounts during winter months. Everyone else benefits from treating peanuts as an occasional food rather than a staple, regardless of season.
